Since April 24th, 2015 I have been exploring the roots of my eating habits that have contributed to my 22 years of obesity. There are several factors in why someone is the size they are, and I can't say that I believe that "one approach works for everyone". But I'm less and less convinced that anything is healthier for us living creatures than eating fresh foods and avoiding the highly processed and sugar-filled world.
For almost two decades I tried everything I could think of to lose weight. My attempts included Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, Slim Fast shakes and various appetite supressing suppliments. I have tried multiple times to take it upon myself to count calories and start up a gym membership. I even had a fitbit. But of all of the diet plans I'd been on throughout my life none of them made me feel good physically and/or mentally. Not feeling joy as a result of a healthy lifestyle just didn't make sense to me. There are people out there who really enjoy leading a healthy lifestyle, so how do I make that happen in my life?
I thought I knew what being healthy meant. The "common sense" solution seems to be counting calories, regardless of how healthy the food is. But not all calories are created equal. For example, it makes an enormous difference to your body if you eat 100 calories of apples versus 100 calories of cookies. I was slowly seeing the benefits of clean eating in my grandparents. They started eating clean in their mid-sixties, and now in their mid-eighties they're breaking a lot of fears I had about aging. I'm 100% convinced that clean eating is the healthiest way to not only lose weight, but improve overall health.
It all came together when I saw a doccumentary on Netflix called "Fed Up". So many things in that film are relatable for me because I also grew up in a household that ate processed foods, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners and colors. The film focuses on the effects of the Western Diet and offers advice on how to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I combined what I'd learned from the film as well as my grandparents, who became health enthusiasts in their mid-sixties. They had always encouraged me to lead a healthier lifestyle, as they said their only regret was that they hadn't started sooner.
Needless to say, I was completely inspired and ready to really give clean eating my best shot.
As of 2019, I have been working with the Prevent Cancer Foundation to connect with others in the gaming community looking to live a healthier lifestyle. I currently work for the Foundation as a community leader on Discord, as well as serve as an ambassador at Awesome Games Done Quick.
